The darkness descends

“Sometimes the darkness just descends without warning.
Without invitation. Without permission.
You know it’s there.
You can feel it.
You don’t want it and yet….
It feels familiar. Safe. Undemanding.
Dangerous. Intoxicating. Seducing.

It comes out of nowhere.
Chipping away day by day, hour by hour.
Gently. Subtly. Covertly.
It is a ninja.
Known of but never seen.
It waits.
Always watching in the background.
Never too far away but not near enough to cause concern.
Close enough to spot a weakness and take advantage.
Take over.
You berate yourself for giving in, as if you had a choice.
It didn’t feel like a choice.
We all have choices.
But this was the easier option. It’s okay.
You’re not the only one.
So what now?
Do we let it take us, encompass our shadow, dull the pain?
It’s tough.
It’s nice here. Quiet. You could just slip away and no one would know.
But You would know.
You would not forget.
Not every fight is a battle won in glory.
Sometimes it is won by the hard choice.
A crossroads.
The unappealing direction.
The decision no one else sees.
To use the darkness for yourself.
To take advantage of the quiet, the safety and the familiarity.
To restock your arsenal.
To heal.
To gather strength.
To wait patiently until the time is right.
Not for the darkness, not for others, but for you.
It is your power that needs replenishing.
You haven’t given it away but it is used up, opening up opportunities for outside forces to come calling.
To beat you into submission.
You will not let that happen. So you stay in the darkness where you can’t be seen.
Hide in the shadow.
Love yourself, nurture yourself.
Take care of you.
Until you are ready to be found.
Because you will be.
One day soon.
You will be ready to step back into the light.
It may be glaring for a while but you will adjust quickly.
The light.
Where it is safe.
Familiar. Demanding so you are kept on your toes.
Dangerous, but you have your wits about you.
Intoxicating, but you are strong enough to walk away.
Seducing, but you can resist temptation.
The light.
It shines bright, warm, comforting, loving.
Like arms waiting to embrace you.
When you are ready.

Ready to be a Warrior again
